Les Paul needed a color that wouldn't look washed out on the new televisions of the time, and a white finish would have been too bright for the exposure of the black and white reproduction. Thus, they thought putting a gold top on it would make it more visible on tv, and added appeal to the classier musicians who were fascinated by Leo Fenders electric guitar but wanted something a bit more fancy.
